About the museum in Lichen

The Fr. Joseph Jarzębowski Museum in Licheń is a unique place that combines history, culture and spirituality. Located on the grounds of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Licheń, the museum is one of the most important cultural centers in the region. Its rich collection includes several thousand exhibits, and the collection is constantly growing thanks to numerous donations. A selection of the most interesting and valuable exhibits representing various fields of art and history are presented on an area of 1,000 m².

The Museum named after Fr. Joseph Jarzębowski, MIC, in Licheń Stary is owned by the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Its history dates back to the 1920s, when Father Joseph Jarzębowski, MIC, established a future school museum at the Marian Fathers' Educational Institution in Bielany, Warsaw. "The Bielany museum was the work of Father Joseph, painstakingly arranged since 1925, that is, from the beginning of his stay as an educator in Bielany."

With the outbreak of World War II, part of the collection was taken out of Warsaw by the priest. During his many years of wandering through Lithuania, Russia, Japan, the USA, Mexico and Italy, Rev. Jarzębowski not only saved the artifacts he had collected earlier, but also expanded the collection to include polonica and items related to the culture of local communities.

In 1950, he arrived in the United Kingdom. There, at the College of Divine Mercy in Fawley Court, he began organizing a new museum and library. The collection grew thanks to donations from the Polish community and purchases.

In 2006, in connection with the relocation of the Religious House, the Congregation of Marian Fathers decided to move the museum to Licheń Stary. The exhibition rooms were located on the second and third floors of the Lichen basilica. The grand opening ceremony took place on July 2, 2010.

Currently, the collection has several thousand exhibits and is constantly growing.
